Earlier today, both the BIG South and the BIG East announced that they be postponing fall athletics for this year due to the ongoing Coronavirus. Both conferences will continue to evaluate competitive opportunities in the spring.
The decisions from these two conferences follows recent announcements from the BIG 10 and PAC-12 -- two Power Five conferences that also opted to postpone fall athletics this year.
In an August 5th media release, the NCAA Board of Governors stated the following...
If 50% or more of eligible teams in a particular sport in a division cancel their fall season, there will be no fall NCAA championship in that sport in that division.
According to Flotrack's Gordon Mack, the postponement of fall sports from both the BIG South and BIG East has pushed the NCAA's total of Division One schools over the 50% cancellation threshold, thus suggesting that the 2020 NCAA D1 XC Championships will be cancelled for this fall.
The NCAA has not made an official announcement regarding the status of fall championships at the time of publication.
